Trial of kidnap kingpin Evans stalled due to EndSARS protest

By Emmanuel Awosika

The trial of notorious kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans, failed to hold on Wednesday after officials of the National Correctional Centre refused to bring him before the Lagos State Special Offences Court.

Evans, along with his co-defendants, were set to appear before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo on Wednesday to continue their trial.

Evans and co-defendants are facing trial on two counts of kidnapping and murder.

However, the NCS declined to transport Evans from the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons to the court for fear of being attacked by EndSARS protesters.

“They are afraid of hijack by protesters,” the court register said.

The Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs. Adeyinka Adeyemi, also corroborated the incident to journalists today.

Evans, a notorious kidnapper before his arrest, is facing trial for his role in the failed abduction of Chairman, Young Shall Grow Motors, Obiando Vincent, on August 27, 2013.

He is also facing prosecution for conspiring with four other suspects to abduct one Sylvanus Hafia on June 23, 2014 and demanding a $2m ransom for his release.

Evans, as well as the other defendants, have all pleased not guilty to the charges against them.
