Aisha Alkali Wakil, popularly known as ‘Mama Boko Haram’ has been re-arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly commiting fraud to the tune of N6m.

Wakil, the CEO of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, was re-arraigned before the Borno State High Court on Tuesday on four counts of conspiracy, giving false information, and defrauding to the tune of six million naira.

Counsel to the Prosecution, Mukhtar Ali Ahmad, had informed the court of a revised charge for Mama Boko Haram.

He prayed the court to dismiss the previous charges filed on March 3 and 10, 2020, substituting it with the one filed on March 18, 2020.

The EFCC released a statement on Wednesday indicating that the presiding judge, Justice Kumaliya, had allowed the substitution of the charges and asked the new charges be read to the defendants.

One of the charges read, “That you, Aisha Alkali Wakil, Tahiru Alhaji Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode, whilst being chief executive officer, programme manager and country director respectively, of Complete Care and Aid Foundation (NGO), sometime between October and November, 2018 at Maiduguri, Borno State, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, dishonestly induced one Alhaji Bukar Kachalla of Abks Ventures Limited to deliver to you a Toyota Camry 2012 Model worth N6m only under the guise of executing a contract for the purchase of the said car and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 (a) and punishable under Section 332 of the Penal Code Cap 102 Laws of Borno State.”

The accused enter a not-guilty plea after which the Defence Counsel asked the court to adjourn the case to allow him review the new charges, so he could negotiate a plea bargain with the EFCC.

The President of the Court, Justice Kumaliya, ordered the adjournment of the case to September 16, 2020.

Mama Boko Haram had initially been charged last year, appearing before the court on December 4, 2019.

Other individuals charged include Tahiru Daura and Lawal Shoyode, who are the Programme Director and Country Director for Mama Boko Haram’s Complete Care and Aid Foundation respectively.

All defendants had pleaded not guilty at the time.
