Lagos debunks news of N500 thousand fine for violating curfew

By Modupe Shodeinde

The Lagos State Government has debunked news reporting payment of N200 to N500 thousand fine for violation of the 2am to 4am curfew imposed by the Federal Government.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, termed the news as “inacurrate and misleading”.

He however reiterated on the state governments’ advise for residents to comply with the Covid-19 protocols and directives the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) gave on how watch night services should be conducted.

The statement read: “The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to an online news item that fines ranging between N20,000 and N500,000 will be imposed on violators of the Federal Government curfew on December 31, 2020. This is inaccurate and misleading.

“The government is advising residents to comply with COVID-19 protocols because the cases are rising. The role of religious organisations in fighting the pandemic is well noted.

“The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a statement on how churches should conduct their watch-night services.

“The Sanwo-Olu administration has maintained a harmonious relationship with religious organisations and has confidence in the ability of their leaders to ensure compliance with COVID-19 protocols, amid the clamour for crossover services.”

Recall that the Lagos Street Journal, reported that the Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, had directed all churches in the state to ensure their services on 31st of December, 2020 end at 11:00 pm.
