Protest In Osogbo Over Hike In Electricity Tariffs, Petrol Price

By Emmanuel Awosika

Members of the Coalition of Civil Societies in Osun State took to the streets of Osogbo, the state capital, to protest the latest hike in the price of petrol and electricity.

Per reports, the protest started at the Freedom Park in Osogbo around 8.30 am.

The protesters bore placards criticizing the Federal Government’s decision to increase pump price of fuel and electricity tariffs in the country.

According to the protester, the approval of the hike in electricity tariffs and petrol prices is “the highest level of insensitivity and wickedness from President Muhammad Buhari-led All Progressives Congress government.”

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had approved a nationwide hike in electricity tariffs on September 1, 2020.

The hike came after plans to increase electricity tariffs by July 1, 2020 had been abandoned by the NERC due to the harsh economic situation in the country.

On September 2, 2020, the Petroleum Products and Marketing Company (PPMC) announced an increase in the pump price of fuel.

The latest hike is the third in under three months. Petrol prices had increased from N121.50-N123.50 per litre in June to N140.80-N143.80 in July to N158-N162 per litre in September.
